Each year, Americans waste an average of 80 million tons of food, literally throwing away more than $444 billion (with a B!) worth. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, approximately 96 percent of household food waste ends up in landfills, in the sewer system via the kitchen sink, and in combustion facilities. This alarming amount of food waste is not only expensive, but it takes an incredible toll on the planet. Food waste isn’t the only culprit in an unsustainable kitchen, though. Things like kitchen air pollution from gas cooking and water and energy waste from non-energy-efficient appliances also have a negative impact.
There are simple ways to mitigate these issues, though, and it starts with your appliance purchases. When shopping for sustainable appliances, there are some key features to look for. Here are some essential qualities that make the deepest positive impact when striving to live sustainably.
Shop for Energy Efficiency
When shopping for your new appliances, energy efficiency should be top of mind. In terms of ranges, consider induction over gas or electric. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, “Induction appliances are up to three times more efficient than gas stoves, and up to 10% more efficient than conventional smooth top electric ranges.” That’s because induction heating uses an electromagnetic field to transfer energy to the induction cookware, making the cookware the source of heat, not the cooktop, which saves immense amounts of wasted energy. Induction is also a safer cooking option because once you remove the cookware from the surface, the heating immediately ceases.
Dishwashers and washers are another great opportunity to find efficiency upgrades. Washers and dishwashers that are considered energy-efficient use not only less energy but up to 30% less water than their non-energy-efficient counterparts.
Zones and Smart Tech
Two key things to look for in your premium and luxury appliance purchases are smart technology and “zones.” For example, when shopping for a refrigerator, look for models with separate interior zones that can be set to separate temperatures. This capability allows you to store certain foods at the perfect temperature to ensure it stays fresh as long as possible. Also, smart technology in your appliances—be it the washer and dryer, refrigerator, or oven—allows you to remotely monitor and operate your appliance, giving you control over things like water levels and run time.
Shop for the Right Size
We’ve previously discussed how “bigger isn’t always better,” and the same notion applies in selecting sustainable appliances. If you have a large family, you need a large refrigerator. If you live alone or with one other person, you likely need a much smaller fridge, which uses a much smaller amount of energy. Be mindful of your actual needs when making your appliance selections.
